The friend reported him missing about 5:30 p.m. after they became separated and Mueller did not return, the Coast Guard said.
Winds were 22 mph and waves were 2 feet high. The Coast Guard sent a rescue boat and helicopter to search. Mueller made it back to the beach on his own about 10 p.m. and called 911, a Coast Guard statement said.
“The Coast Guard strongly discourages boaters and swimmers from taking to the water as (Tropical Storm) Hanna nears the Carolina and Virginia coasts,” the statement said.
